MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy about the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan who is forced to reunite with her family because of the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend. Army. The family is at loggerheads. Despite the tenacity of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the lightheartedness of an unexpected romance, Merit’s intimate, dysfunctional friendship with Zoe isolates them from the world. Until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in the family’s lake house, loses his bearings and needs the one thing he refuses: help. Ultimately, it’s a film about a complicated friendship, a family torn apart, and the complex ways we process grief.
